Jonathan is a UK, Australian and New Zealand trained specialist who was conferred his fellowship in 2015. He has had more than 10 years of specialist surgical experience and works as an upper gastrointestinal surgeon in Perth with dual surgical fellowships from both the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh and the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons with formal oesophago-gastric and bariatric post-fellowship training.

The field of Upper GI surgery is a highly technical and specialised craft, and he was selected for and underwent a further three years training with a prestigious formal Upper GI (FAANZGOSA) programme with the College of Surgeons. These were high volume specialised fellowships at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital in Perth and the Austin in Melbourne. He was then trained with Professor Michael Griffin at the Royal Victoria Infirmary. This is one of the pre-eminent Upper GI units in the United Kingdom, and has one of the highest oesophagogastric cancer surgical volumes in Western Europe and North America. He was subsequently conferred his Edinburgh fellowship and underwent further training at the National Cancer Institute in Tokyo, Japan.

He returned to St John of God Subiaco, Hollywood and Glengarry Private Hospitals as a specialist consultant surgeon. Jonathan has a public appointment at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital as a specialist upper GI and bariatric surgeon and he is the current Surgical Director of Clinical Training. With this interest in research and education he has dual university appointments with the University of Western Australia as a Clinical Associate Professor in the Discipline of Surgery and with the University of Notre Dame as an Adjunct Associate Professor with the School of Medicine. He has been an invited speaker at many international meetings and published widely on bariatric, oesophagogastric, small bowel and leadership topics.

Jonathan has expertise in complex upper GI modalities such as oesophagogastric cancer, biliary pathology, hiatus hernia, reflux and bariatric surgery. He also has a keen interest in abdominal hernias. As part of his state surgical duties, Jonathan provides public bariatric surgery for complex patients such as revisional bariatric surgery, >180kg patients or with major medical co-morbidities. He is available for private bariatric surgery at SJOG Subiaco and Hollywood Private Hospital.

Keyhole and robotic surgery in the upper gastrointestinal tract is a delicate and technical area. Careful and deliberate decisions are needed to deliver surgical excellence and quality of life.
